Wedding To Do List, Insurance Edition!

The big day is coming! Congrats!

We get it—when you get married, there's a long to-do list of everything to get done. It's an exciting time, but a stressful one.

In the midst of getting the dress and the cake, don't forget the things that affect your health and finances. It's easy to over look your insurance changes now that your household is growing and there's so much to do. Give your local agent a call and we'll help you make sure everything is covered!

Insurance To Do List

1) Call your agent to let them know you're married!

First, make sure you've told your agent that you're getting married! Your marital status needs to be updated on your insurance so your taxes will be correct for the year. Even if you are staying on separate plans (for example, a work plan), your new spouse will still need to be listed on your insurance as a member of your household!

Also, the monthly premium for your health insurance is based on your household size, zip code, and total household income—each of which often change because of a new marriage. Let your agent know about the changes to make sure you're not overpaying for insurance!

2) Get life insurance plans on each other!

Life insurance (and the associated implications of early death) is not something most people want to think about, especially when they're just getting married. However, it's an important thing to think about and prepare for, especially when you're bringing another person (or more!) you care about into your family.

Once you're married, your life becomes more intwined with your spouse—specifically in regards to finance! Get a life insurance check up with a local agent to make sure each of you would be able to maintain your lifestyle in the event of a death. It's not as expensive as you think, and even just doing the math with your agent to find out how much insurance you'd need could give you some peace of mind. Make a plan for the future so you can enjoy the present.

3) Check out other insurance based on your new lifestyle!

Now that you're combining finances and starting a household together, it's a good time to check in on what insurance you might need for your lifestyles!

Do either of your families have histories of cancer or heart attacks? There are insurances for specific illnesses that can cover your diagnosis and treatment. If it's something that you're worried about, check with an agent to see how the plans can replace your income while you recover.

Newlywed couples should also consider accident and hospital/sickness insurance. If you're spending your honeymoon adventuring—or even some time adventuring while you're child-free—you can get accident insurance to cover all injuries that might occur! This insurance will cover things like broken bones and stitches, so you don't have to pay out of pocket. Hospital/sickness insurance will cover things like pneumonia or long hospital stays for illness recovery. Don't go into debt for illness so early into your new life as a married couple.

There are, of course, other types of insurance to consider (or combine plans for!). Do you both have dental and vision coverage? Are there children now claimed by the both of you, and do they have full coverage? Call or text us with questions about coverage for your new family. Our help is always free!
