3 Key Benefits of Dental Insurance

Is Dental Insurance Really Worth It?

Yes, dental insurance really is worth it! Here are three important points that have us convinced:

1. People with dental insurance are more likely to see the dentist.

Many people wonder why they should pay an annual premium when they can just pay for dental out-of-pocket only when it's absolutely necessary.

The truth is, you CAN pay for dental costs out-of-pocket, however, the annual premium for the insurance policy is usually comparable to the out-of-pocket costs you would pay in that scenario (for example, paying for two cleanings and an annual exam). The downside to paying out-of-pocket is that you will have no reason to go to the dentist for preventative care—many people will only go for emergency dental work. Individuals with dental insurance seek out preventative care at a much higher rate than those who don’t, and are also more likely to visit the dentist in general.

2. Good oral health is closely tied to good overall health

Good oral health means much more than having nice teeth and an attractive smile—it could save your life! Oral cancer can be deadly, but when detected early it is a much more treatable and curable disease. You can reduce the chance of oral cancer spreading by taking preventative dental measures and going for regular check-ups! Preventative care can also lower the chance of other chronic conditions, including things that you wouldn’t automatically associate with good oral care.

It may surprise you, but individuals without dental benefits are:

  • More likely to have diabetes,

  • More likely to have osteoporosis

  • More likely to have heart disease

Make your oral health a priority, and visit the dentist for the dental care you need!

3. Chances are high you'll need more than just preventative care

Someday down the road you may require more than just preventative dental care. These services are typically more expensive when paid for out-of-pocket, and it pays (literally!) to have insurance to help you out. These costs might be for anything from basic services (fillings, restorative services, adjunctive care, etc.) to major services (crowns, root canals, periodontal treatment, etc.). When these services are needed, your dental insurance can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars.

You are likely to need basic, major, and emergency dental services at some point in your life.

  • Millions of root canals are performed annually in the US

  • It’s not uncommon for someone to have three or more fillings

  • Approximately 2.3 million crowns are made annually

  • Half of Americans aged 30 or older have periodontitis

When you are in need of any of these procedures, you'll want to be grateful for your health insurance, not frustrated by out-of-pocket costs.
